UTA ratifies general strike starting midnight

The UTA transport union today ratified a 24-hour general strike to begin at midnight which will disrupt transport services.

Buses, trains, planes and subways will not be in service, as well as waste collection services, freight transport, the stocking of ATM machines, and port and maritime activity

In statements to a radio station today, UTA’s Secretary-General Roberto Fernández fired: “The government seems to like when we strike.”

According to organizers, the strike was called to demand an Income Tax reform, free wage talks, a hike in pensions, and the legalisation of non-registered employment, among other labour complaints.

The measure will be backed by dissident unions linked to CGT and CTA umbrella unions.

"We want to talk but we are not listened,” Fernández told reporters. “Leaders are there to rule and have an obligation to listen. We are not the opponents or pro-government, we are unionists who defend the rights of the workers.”

The union leader warned buses will stop circulating from midnight until Tuesday’s last minute. City subway services will also be halted.

"After the strike we will seek dialogue again. I cannot assure anything but we’ll see what happens in July,” Fernández said suggesting there might be more protest measures next month.
